Abstract

This article examines the experience of real-time movement sonification of artistic practice (e.g., training, creative process, and performance) of a dance performance titled as Biodatasonaatti (“Biodata sonata”) produced by Dance Theatre Minimi in collaboration with the SonicMove project. In the article, we introduce the method of sonification in the context of performative dance, presenting an overview of the technical development of the applied sonification and further discussing its meaning to the dancer's agency. From this perspective, we argue that the method of sonification used in the artistic practice enhanced the agency of the dancers in three intertwined ways: within the somatic experience (i.e., kinesthetic and interoception) of the dancer, in the communication with the other dancers, and innovatively steered the choreography.
