Abstract

Jean Sibelius’s work ”Har du mod?” (Op. 31 No. 2) has survived in several versions. In previous literature, there have been multiple differing interpretations regarding the number of versions, their dating, and their chronological order. The purpose of this article is to (1) date the versions based on surviving biographical material (especially correspondence and diary) and (2) analyze the unspoken assumptions underlying the earlier datings. A systematic review of the biographical and musical sources has succeeded in clarifying several ambiguities and contradictions found in earlier literature. The most significant finding is the identification of a previously unknown and currently lost third version.
